Germany’s Timber-Frame Route – Between Lahn and Rhine

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Dillenburg
Dillenburg’s landmark ‘Wilhelm’s Tower’ on castle hill reminds of its founder William of Orange and opens magnificent views over Dillenburg’s historic district. Dinner and accommodation in the Wetzlar/Giessen area.

 

Day 2: Herborn – Wetzlar
Herborn boasts plenty of listed buildings, such as its reformed academy ‘Hohe Schule’ (High School), ‘Rathaus’ (Town Hall) on its romantic market square and its one-thousand years old town church. In the afternoon, carry on to Wetzlar. Gateway to Wetzlar’s historic centre with its medieval market square, its unfinished medieval cathedral and fountains is its more than 750 years old stone bridge across the river Lahn. Dinner in a restaurant in Wetzlar. Accommodation in the Wetzlar/Giessen area.

 

Day 3: Braunfels – Hadamar
Braunfels boasts a romantic market square and a fabulous castle. In the afternoon, continue to Hadamar with the Prince of Nassau-Hadamar’s Renaissance palace and beautiful walkways. The town is a treasure trove of historic buildings of all epochs. Continue to Limburg. Dinner and accommodation.

 

Day 4: Limburg – Bad Camberg
See Limburg’s cathedral with its characteristic seven spires and Romanesque frescos, its squares and romantic timber-frame buildings from the 13th to the 19th century. Continue to Bad Camberg. The town boasts such treasures as the ‘Sadony’sches Haus’, the ‘Amthof’ gallery and the ‘Obertor’ tower gate. Do not miss the spa gardens with their trick fountains. Return to Limburg. Dinner and accommodation.

 

Day 5: Idstein – Eltville
Idstein impresses by its ‘King Adolf Square’, its gorgeous Union Church and its ‘Hexenturm’ (Witch Tower). Enjoy listed buildings out of five centuries in its historic quarter. Continue to Eltville in the Rheingau region, known for its wine and its roses. See picturesque patrician mansions, ostentatious royal houses and the Elector’s castle with the Gutenberg monument. Tasting a glass of the famous Riesling wine is a must here. Dinner and accommodation in the Rhine/Main region.

 

Day 6: Departure after Breakfast
