In the Footsteps of Pope Benedict XVI

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Munich
Accommodation in your hotel in the Munich area.

 

Day 2: Munich – Altötting – Regensburg
In the morning a tour guide will expect you for a full day tour in the footsteps of Pope Benedict XVI. (Joseph Ratzinger). Take the Motorway A 8 (E 52) towards Salzburg and turn off to Traunstein, where Josef finished high school (Chiemgau-Gymnasium) in 1943 and studied at the Archbishop‘s Seminary on Wartberghöhe Hill. Then continue to Tittmoning where Joseph‘s family moved in 1929 and where little Joseph, aged 3, went to playschool in the previous Augustinian Monastery. Afterwards, move on to Altötting, the Bavarian National Sanctuary which has been visited by several Popes and where Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger celebrated numerous masses and pilgrims‘ events. Then continue to Marktl, a little village on the river Inn. On Market Square you can see the house where Joseph Ratzinger was born on April 16, 1927. Continue to Aschau where young Joseph went to primary school and received the Holy Communion. In the nearby village of Au he took piano lessons with the Franciscan nuns. Then continue to Regensburg. Day 3: Regensburg
After breakfast meet your local tour guide, who will show you places in Regensburg that are linked to Joseph, such as his private house in Pentling (a suburb of Regensburg), his parents‘ and sister‘s graves in Regensburg, the Cathedral and the university where professor Joseph Ratzinger taught lessons in Dogmatic Studies and History. In the afternoon there will be time for your own discoveries in the historic city centre of this romantic city. Accommodation in your hotel in the Regensburg area.

 

Day 4: Regensburg – Munich
Today start your journey back to Munich, where Pope Benedict got his Ph. D. in Theology in 1953, was appointed Archbishop of Munich-Freising in 1977 and thereafter Cardinal by Pope Paul VI. In the afternoon your local tour guide will expect you to take you on a city tour in Munich, during which you can see Munich‘s most interesting buildings, such as the old and the new Council Hall, the Lady‘s Church “Frauenkirche” the historic city centre and much more. Then return to your hotel in the Munich area.

 

Day 5: Departure after Breakfast
After today‘s breakfast you will leave Munich on your journey back home.
